INDOOR PLANTS

A green home is good for the soul. And air quality.

Variegated Boston fern

VARIEGATED BOSTON FERN

One of my favourite hanging pot plants is the variegated Boston Fern. It handles dry spells and forms a waterfall of foliage that makes any space feel friendly.

Being an under-canopy plant, and variegated, direct sunlight will wash out the colour, so position in an area with bright indirect light for luscious cascading growth.

Cut away any old fronds back to the base, and water weekly during winter, and twice weekly during warm weather.

Monstera

MONSTERA

Monstera’s need a fair amount of light, so position closer to a window. Variegated varieties such as Thai Constellation (pictured) however require less direct light otherwise the white parts discolour easily. They will need a strong support to grow up, and as they mature the leaves become larger and more defined.

PHILODENDRONS

Philodendrons come in a great variety of leaf shapes, sizes and colours.

Philodendron White Knight has long been a favourite with it’s dark red stems contrasting with splashes of white variegation, and leaves that can have three tones of green plus white.

Philodendron vines such as Brazil and Lime are easy to grow indoors around a supporting structure.

HOYAS

So many varieties to choose from with different leaf shapes, colours and flowers. They grow very well indoors by a window, but to flower will require bright indirect light. Think ahead and provide a climbing structure that is large enough to accommodate long term growth.

Epipremnum aurea Manjula pothos

A stunning and hardy variegated vine that will wow your guests. It is a heavy vine and will need a strong support structure to wrap itself around. The happier it is, the larger the leaves grow (pictured on the right).

ZYGOCACTUS

ZYGOCACTUS

Yes cacti varieties can successfully be grown indoors, directly by a window for optimal light. The zygocactus is a favourite variety as it has interesting segmented stems and delightfully colourful flowers.
